Did you know that feathers figure into the founding of the Audubon Society? Back in 1886 ornithologist Frank Chapman conducted a feathered-hat census and counted 40 species of Aves, including ruffed grouse, cedar waxwing, northern flicker, … on 542 different women. Chapman’s findings outraged certain citizens so much that they banded together under the banner of the early Audubon Society, boycotted hatmakers and shopkeepers in an attempt to put feathers out of style, and lobbied for protections against poaching nationwide, paving the road for the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
