Flycatchers of Illinois

Flycatchers are one of the most challenging group of songbirds to identify. Members found in one particular genus, Empidonax, are extremely difficult, even for researchers who have a bird in hand! For these species, song is the best identification tool to use. There are 11 species in the flycatcher family that can be found in Illinois at some point during the annual cycle. A twelfth species occurs in Illinois with some regularity, but the closest known breeding location is in western Missouri. The goal of this quiz is to work through identification skills of flycatchers, including field marks and song.
