Native American Bird Knowledge
As we celebrate Native American Heritage Month there is no better way to know the birds than to explore the knowledge of the First Americans and their connections to birds and our shared environment. You might be surprised that several common and scientific names for birds that we currently use are derived from the tribes that share the birds’ habitat. Early explorers from Audubon to Ridgway valued Native American knowledge and sought out information from their native guides and neighbors. Native American art and culture are woven with information about birds and ecology. This week’s quiz will challenge you, inspire you, and hopefully add another layer to your appreciation for the bird tribe. Let us be grateful for those who came before us and the First Americans who walk along with us. Happy Thanksgiving!
